Custom Steel and Wood Railings Built for a Bemidji Home

We just wrapped up a custom railing package on this Bemidji home alongside BOD Construction. This was the kind of job where the details had to be right - the space is too open and too well-designed to settle for something generic off a shelf.

The home has a large open loft area that overlooks the main living space and kitchen below. That kind of layout puts the railing front and center. Everyone in the house sees it constantly. It needed to look sharp and hold up without question.

What we landed on was a horizontal steel bar infill paired with natural wood top rails and posts. The black steel keeps things modern and clean. The wood warms it up and ties into the rest of the home's finishes. It's a combination that works really well in spaces like this - not too industrial, not too rustic.

The stair rail follows the same design language all the way down to the entry. That consistency matters. When every piece of the railing system matches from the loft edge to the staircase to the landing, the whole home feels intentional. That's exactly what custom structural work should do.
